What the microwave magnetron repair
involves.
The magnetron is a small, heavy tube bolted to the side of the cavity, and it is the only part of a microwave that turns electricity into the energy that heats food. It wears out with hours of use, and it is damaged sooner by running the microwave empty, by long cycles with little in the cavity, and by arcing from a burned waveguide cover that reflects energy back into it. A failing magnetron heats weakly, heats in bursts, buzzes loudly, or stops heating while everything else keeps running. Because a dead diode, a failed capacitor, a thermal cutout or a transformer can look exactly the same from outside, the magnetron is replaced only after those have been tested, with the capacitor discharged first. Its filament and its insulation to the case are checked on a meter, the new tube is fitted with its gasket seated evenly on the waveguide, and the cooling fan that keeps it alive is checked too. When the arcing came from the cavity side, the waveguide cover is replaced and any scorched paint beneath it is dealt with, or the new tube will meet the same end. On a small countertop unit the technician tells you before ordering whether the magnetron is worth fitting at all.
How the visit goesWhat it usually costsModerate to highest · Magnetron and waveguide cover
A burned waveguide cover alone is a small part. A new magnetron is one of the dearest parts a microwave takes, and on a hood combination or a drawer that has to come out of its mounting the labor adds a step.

Microwave magnetron repair,
step by step.
Close the cabinet, test the door for leakage, and reheat the water to show the heat is back to what the unit should deliver.
Heat a measured cup of water and listen to the unit run, noting any buzz, hum or flash in the cavity.
Cut the power, open the cabinet and discharge the capacitor, then test the diode, the capacitor, the transformer and the thermal cutouts first.
Read the magnetron's filament and check its insulation to the case, and look at the waveguide cover and the cavity wall for burn marks.
Fit the new magnetron with its gasket seated, renew a burned waveguide cover, and check the cooling fan that blows across the tube.
Close the cabinet, test the door for leakage, and reheat the water to show the heat is back to what the unit should deliver.

Before you call
Tell us this when you book
- Whether it stopped heating suddenly, grew weaker over months, or heats only now and then
- Whether you heard a loud buzz or hum, or saw sparks, a flash or a small flame on the side wall
- Whether it has ever been run empty, or with a very small amount of food for a long time
- The type and rough age of the microwave, and whether it has a convection or speed mode

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the microwave magnetron repair goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
A Tampa Bay microwave that lights, turns and hums yet leaves a mug of coffee cold points to the magnetron or its high-voltage partners, and after a season of storm surges the technician tests that whole section before replacing the tube alone.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Rental guests in Orlando press start on an empty microwave more often than owners ever would, and with nothing in the cavity to absorb it the energy returns to the magnetron, the part that most often gives out in those units.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
South Florida humidity lets rust creep onto a magnetron's cooling fins and mounting in a condo shut for the summer, and a microwave that heats weakly when the owner returns in the fall is tested at the tube before any board is touched.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
In a New York apartment the microwave may reheat every meal of the day, and a magnetron worn by years of that duty warms food slowly and in patches before it stops heating altogether, which is when most owners call.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
August heat in a Houston kitchen makes a microwave's cooling fan work to keep the magnetron cool, and a clogged vent or a slow fan lets the tube overheat, so the repair checks the airflow along with the magnetron it protects.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
A Chicagoland microwave hood combination breathes cooking steam and grease past its own electronics all winter with the windows shut, and a magnetron coated in that film runs hot; the repair replaces the tube and cleans the path around it.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Los Angeles owners usually notice a tired magnetron as a microwave that needs twice the time for the same bowl of soup, and the repair confirms it with a measured water test before a model-specific tube is ordered.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
In San Diego beach kitchens a new magnetron can fail early if salt has eaten the terminals that feed it, so a magnetron repair near the shore also cleans or renews the connectors and the wiring on that high-voltage path.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
A combination microwave in a Bay Area remodel may be the household's only way to reheat as well as brown, and its magnetron is specific to the model, so the part is chosen from the data plate rather than a generic listing.
