A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands at a stainless countertop microwave on a kitchen counter in a US home, reading a digital probe thermometer in a clear glass measuring cup of water he has just taken out of the open microwave, the microwave's glass turntable visible inside.

Microwave
Diagnostic Visit

A visit that times a cup of water against the clock, checks the door and its switches, then tests the high-voltage section, the controls and the moving parts one at a time until a single part is named.

What the microwave diagnostic visit
involves.

A microwave diagnostic visit starts with a test anyone can repeat and few people do: a measured cup of water, its temperature taken before and after a minute or two at full power. That rise says more than the display does, separating a unit that does not heat at all from one that heats weakly or only now and then. Next comes the door, because it governs everything else: the latch hooks, the hinge, the seal surface and the three interlock switches that have to close in the right order before the microwave is allowed to start. Only then does the outer cabinet come off, with the power cut and the high-voltage capacitor discharged and confirmed at zero by the technician before any hand goes inside. The fuse, the thermal cutouts, the diode, the capacitor, the transformer or the inverter board and the magnetron are each put on a meter, along with the turntable motor, the cooling fan and, on a hood combination, the exhaust fan and lamp. Any code on the display is read and matched against what the parts show. You leave with a named part, the work it needs and its cost, and a word on whether this microwave is worth it.

How the visit goes

Microwave diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Name the failed part, the work and its price, say plainly whether the microwave is worth repairing, and close it up tested.

01

Hear what happened and when, then heat a measured cup of water and read how many degrees it gained.

02

Check the door: the latch hooks, the hinge, the seal surface and the order in which the three interlock switches close.

03

Cut the power, open the outer cabinet and discharge the capacitor, confirming it at zero before anything inside is touched.

04

Test the fuse, the thermal cutouts, the high-voltage parts, the magnetron, the board and the fans and motors one by one.

05

Name the failed part, the work and its price, say plainly whether the microwave is worth repairing, and close it up tested.

Microwave Runs but Food Stays Cold

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether it is a hood combination above the burners, a built-in or speed model, a drawer, or a countertop unit
  2. What it does now: dead display, lit display with no heat, sparks, a smell, a noise, a stuck drawer or a code
  3. Whether the breaker tripped or anything was heard or smelled when it quit, and what was inside at the time
  4. The model and serial number from the label inside the door frame or on the back

Read these steps as a way to compare microwave jobs, not as a quote for the one in your kitchen. A microwave that lights up and turns its plate but leaves food cold could have a blown thermal cutout, a door switch the board is waiting on, a shorted diode, a tired capacitor or a magnetron at the end of its life, and no phone call can tell those apart. The high-voltage parts can only be tested with the cabinet open and the capacitor discharged, so no figure is given until that has been done and the likely part has been measured. The price reaches you before any repair begins, and yes or no stays your decision.

Microwave diagnostic visit,
where we come out.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the microwave diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A microwave diagnostic visit around Tampa Bay often follows a summer of lightning, so the technician asks whether the display died during a storm and tests the unit's internal fuse and the kitchen circuit before suspecting the magnetron or the board.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Microwaves in Orlando vacation rentals meet a new family every week, and the first minutes of a diagnosis often clear a control lock or a demo mode a guest switched on, then time a cup of water to see whether the unit really heats.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

For a built-in microwave in a South Florida condo tower, diagnosis starts at the trim kit and the touchpad, where damp salt air settles on the contacts, and the technician's arrival is timed to the building's rules for trades and its freight lift.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Many New York galleys hang a microwave hood combination low over the cooking surface, and the diagnostic visit works from the front, reading the door interlocks and running a heating test without lifting the unit off its wall plate.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston subdivisions finished in the same few years carry one microwave hood combination on street after street, so a diagnostic visit there often knows the model's usual weak spot, a door switch or a humidity sensor, before the meter confirms it.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland bungalows and two-flats the microwave often shares an old kitchen circuit with a toaster and a kettle, so the diagnostic visit measures that outlet under load before it names any part inside the microwave itself.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Across Los Angeles a diagnosis on a microwave that quit after a fire-season shutoff begins with the supply side: a fuse blown by the surge when the grid came back is checked before the board or the magnetron is blamed.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego microwave calls split between beach condos, where salt reaches the door latch and the touchpad, and inland family kitchens that run the unit all day, and the diagnostic visit starts by learning which of the two it is.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels often set a speed or convection microwave into a tall cabinet, and the diagnostic visit tests its microwave heating and its browning heat as two separate jobs, since one can fail while the other still works.

Questions about
the microwave diagnostic visit.

Can I open the microwave cabinet to look for a loose wire before the visit?
Please do not. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a charge strong enough to kill for a long time after the plug is pulled, and it sits right beside the parts most people want to look at. Checking the breaker, the outlet and the door from outside is safe; everything behind the outer cabinet waits for the technician.
What is the simplest test that shows whether my microwave heats?
Put one cup of cool tap water in a glass measuring cup and run it for one minute at full power. A healthy full-size microwave warms it clearly, often to the point of being hot to the touch. If it is barely warmer than it started, the unit is not heating, and it is worth writing down both temperatures if you have a kitchen thermometer.
My microwave worked again after I unplugged it for a while. Should I still book?
If it came back after being unplugged, a thermal cutout may have cooled and reset, or the control board rebooted. Both hide a cause that usually returns: a blocked vent, a tired fan, a switch or a board on its way out. Keep an eye on it, use short cycles, and book if it happens again.
Is the visit fee taken off the price of a microwave repair?
That depends on the terms of the booking, so ask about it when you schedule. After testing, the technician gives the price of the repair in person and waits for your answer before any part is changed.
