Is yours
a hood combination?
A microwave hood combination, sold by most makers as an over-the-range microwave, does two jobs from one steel box bolted to a plate on the wall and hung from the cabinet overhead. Its cavity reheats and defrosts like any microwave; its underside carries a pair of mesh grease filters, a cooktop light and an exhaust fan that either pushes air outdoors through a duct or passes it through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen. The electronics sit a foot or two above open flames and boiling pots, which is why these models carry a thermal switch that turns the fan on by itself when the heat underneath climbs, and why a clogged filter can make the whole unit run hot. Its power cord does not reach a wall outlet at counter height: it passes through a hole into the cabinet above and plugs in there, out of sight. Taking one down is a two-person job with the bolts through the cabinet floor and the weight hanging on a hinge of tabs, so a visit starts with everything that can be reached from the front and the underside before anyone lifts it off the wall.
What fails on a microwave hood combination
How to tell
It hangs under a run of wall cabinets directly above the burners, with its bottom edge roughly level with the tops of your cheekbones.
The underside has two slotted or mesh metal filters and a small lamp that lights the pots below, controlled by keys marked for the fan and the light.
Opening the cabinet above shows a cord coming up through a round hole and a plug in an outlet, and often a duct or a vent grille on top.
The front carries a door that swings on a side hinge like a countertop model, but there is no gap around the cabinet: it fills the space between the wall cabinets.

What fails
on this design.
On a microwave hood combination: grease filters packed solid, an exhaust fan that slows or quits, the lamp under the cabinet, heat reaching the electronics.
The problems it showsGrease filters packed solid
Every pan of bacon sends a haze into the mesh, and after months without a soak in hot soapy water the openings close up. The fan then strains, the air under the unit stays smoky, and the electronics above lose part of the airflow that keeps them cool.
An exhaust fan that slows or quits
The blower motor sits behind the top grille and runs every time steam rises below. Its bearings dry out, a speed relay on the board sticks, or the heat switch that starts it on its own wears, and the kitchen fills with haze while the microwave still cooks.
The lamp under the cabinet
The cooking-area light lives in the hottest, greasiest spot in the kitchen. Bulbs fail often, but so do the sockets and the small cover lenses that crack after years of heat, and on some models the light shares a relay with the fan.
Heat reaching the electronics
A tall stockpot on a high flame, a clogged filter and a fan left off can bake the control board and the door switches from below. A unit that stops mid-cycle, flickers its display or trips its thermal cutout often has heat from the cooking below behind it.
Getting at it,
and whether to.
Filters, the lamp, the turntable and the door are all reached from the front and the underside, so much of the work never takes the unit off the wall.
What repairs costOn the visit
- Deeper repairs mean lifting it off its mounting plate: the bolts come out from inside the cabinet above, and the cord is unplugged there first, so clear that shelf before the visit.
- Leave the burners below cold and bare for an hour ahead of the appointment; the technician stands at the burner grates and works overhead.
- Never open the cabinet of the microwave yourself to chase the problem: the capacitor inside keeps a dangerous charge long after the plug is pulled, and the work belongs to someone equipped to discharge it.
Repair or replace
A microwave hood combination costs more to replace than its sticker suggests, because a new one has to match the mounting plate, the duct outlet and the cabinet width, and the old one comes down with two people and a cabinet to empty. A filter, a lamp, a fan motor, a door switch or a turntable motor is nearly always worth fitting. A failed magnetron or control board on an entry-level unit past ten years old is where the numbers can cross, and you see both before deciding.
