Sharp microwaves,
specifically.

Sharp is the name most people connect with the microwave drawer: its Microwave Drawer ovens come in 24- and 30-inch widths and glide open and shut on a motorized drawer system, from the SMD2470 through the Easy Wave Open SMD2489ES to the SMD2499FS convection drawer. Sharp also sells microwave hood combinations such as the SMO1969JS and the R1874 convection model, and countertop models including the SMC1585, which accepts an optional trim kit for a cabinet opening.

The Sharp lineup

What is particular
to Sharp.

We work on Sharp Microwave Drawer ovens (SMD2470, SMD2480, SMD2489, SMD2499, the SMD2420 and SMD2430 series and the older KB6524), Sharp hood combinations such as the SMO1969JS and R1874, and Sharp countertop models, including the SMC1585 when it is fitted into a cabinet with a trim kit. The model number tells us which drawer generation and which display messages we are dealing with.

A drawer that moves on its own

Sharp's drawers open and close on the Easy Touch Automatic Drawer system, and the manual asks owners to use the OPEN/CLOSE pad rather than pushing or pulling by hand except in an emergency such as a power cut. A drawer that stalls, jerks or stops short is a drive and rail question, so we look at the mechanism before anything on the heating side.

Controls behind a flip-down panel

On the classic drawers the key sheet hides behind a panel on the top front edge that tilts down to a 45-degree angle and is held by magnetic latches. A panel that no longer stays up or down is a latch problem, not a control board problem, and it is a quick check on the first visit.

Opened with a wave of the hand

The SMD2489ES and the SMD2499FS add Easy Wave Open, a motion sensor on the front that opens the drawer but never closes it. The feature defaults to off whenever the unit is plugged in, so a drawer that stopped answering a wave after an outage usually needs the setting turned back on, not a part.

Flush mounting without a kit

Newer drawers such as the SMD2430MS and SMD2489ES carry Built-In Airflow Control, which lets them sit flush with the cabinet fronts without a separate trim kit or vent deflector. The vent under the drawer still has to stay open, so a drawer that runs hot or shuts down early gets its airflow path checked along with the parts.

Parts

Drawer drive parts, rails and control panels differ from one drawer generation to the next, so the model and serial number are confirmed before anything is ordered. Hood-combination filters and countertop turntable parts are common stock items; drawer mechanism assemblies can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

A drawer that will not open or close, a blown fuse or a failed door switch is normally worth repairing, because the drawer is set into cabinetry that was built around it. On an older compact countertop model that has lost its magnetron, replacement is often the more sensible choice.

Questions about
Sharp microwaves.

Why won't my Sharp microwave drawer open when I press OPEN/CLOSE?
Check the display for LOCK ON first. On Sharp drawers the Control Lock disables the automatic drawer mechanism as well as the keys, so holding STOP/CLEAR for 3 seconds may be all it needs. If the lock is off and the drawer still does not move, book a visit so the drive and its rails can be checked.
Can I push a Sharp microwave drawer shut by hand?
Sharp asks you to use the OPEN/CLOSE pad and to move the drawer by hand only in an emergency such as a power failure, and then slowly. Forcing it against the motor is one of the ways a drive gear gets damaged.
Why does my new Sharp countertop microwave keep its door locked after cooking?
Countertop models made for the US from April 2024 carry a child-resistant door lock that holds the door for 30 minutes after a cycle unless you press the unlock key. Sharp publishes a key sequence for each model that turns the lock off, and the display then shows OFF or DOOR LOCK OFF.
What do Er03, Er04, Er05 and Er06 mean on a Sharp microwave?
They are protection messages on Sharp's countertop convection model with air fry: Er03 for overheating, Er04 for low temperature, and Er05 and Er06 for an open or shorted thermostat circuit. Each one sounds an alert until STOP/CLEAR is pressed; if the same code returns on the next cycle, book a visit.
