What it
usually means.

A microwave drawer is opened and closed by a small motor that drives a gear rack along its side, on rails much like a heavy kitchen drawer. The board watches the motor and a set of position switches, and on most models, if the drawer meets resistance, it stops or reverses so it does not pinch fingers or strain the gears. That protection is why ordinary things stop it: a stool or a bin left in front, the edge of a thick mat on a low island installation, a dish taller than the drawer, a towel or a lid caught in the gap. The control lock locks the drawer as well, and it is a common reason one stays shut. Past that, gears wear, a rail loses its rollers, a position switch fails, or the motor stops. A drawer that closes but will not heat has door switches of its own that must report it fully shut. Drawers are built into the cabinetry, often in an island, and sliding one out to reach the mechanism is a job for a visit.

Answer these first

01

Does the drawer not move at all, start and stop, or reverse partway?

02

Is anything in front of it, such as a stool, a bin or the edge of a thick mat?

03

Does a lock icon show on the control panel?

04

Can you hear the motor run when you press open?

05

Does it close fully and still refuse to heat?

Check these
before you book.

Microwave drawer not opening: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Check the control panel for a lock icon, and release it the way the manual shows.

02

Clear the floor and the space in front of the drawer: a stool, a bin, a mat edge.

03

If it opens partway, take out any tall dish or item catching on the top edge.

Also worth checking

  • Do not pull or push the drawer by hand against the motor; the gears strip.
  • Note whether the motor sounds, and send the model number from the label on the drawer frame.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent. Do not force the drawer either way, and keep small children away from the controls; many owners leave the control lock on for that reason.

6 things microwave drawer won't open or close turns out to be, from control lock holding the drawer shut to control board.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Control lock holding the drawer shut

On drawer models the control lock locks the drawer too, which is why many families keep it on. The manual shows the press that releases it.

  2. 02 no repair

Something in its path or a dish too tall

A stool, a dog bowl, a mat edge on a low install, or a dish that catches the top of the opening stops the drawer and sends it back. Clearing the path is the whole fix.

  3. 03 low to moderate

Drawer door switches not reporting closed

The drawer closes, but its switches do not agree it is shut, so the board will not heat. A worn actuator or a switch at its end is replaced as a set.

  4. 04 moderate

    Worn gear rack or rails

Years of motor-driven travel wear the teeth on the rack and the rollers on the rails. The drawer grinds, jumps, or stops at the same spot each time.

  5. 05 moderate

Drawer motor or position switch failed

A silent motor, or a drawer that runs past its stop or halts halfway with nothing in the way, points to the motor or the switches that tell the board where the drawer is.

  6. 06 moderate to highest

    Control board

When the motor and switches test good and the drawer still ignores the open key, the board that drives them is next.

Questions about
microwave drawer won't open or close.

Can I open a microwave drawer by hand when the power is out?
Many models are meant to move only under their motor, and pulling hard can strip the gears. Wait for power, and check the manual for what your model allows.
Why does my drawer stop and go back the way it came?
It met resistance and reversed to protect fingers and the motor. Something in the path, a dish too tall, or a worn rail is the usual reason.
The child lock keeps the drawer shut. Is that normal?
Yes. On drawer models the control lock locks the drawer too, so a small child cannot open it. The manual shows the press that releases it.
Is a drawer repaired in place, or taken out of the cabinet?
Some parts are reached with the drawer open; others need the unit slid out of its opening. The fit and the rails are checked before it goes back in.
