Door Won't Latch Shut
A microwave door not closing may bounce back open, need a hard push or a slam to click, close but leave the unit refusing to start, or hang crooked from one side, and on a hood combination at head height it is also the part people lean on most.

What it
usually means.
A side-hinged microwave door closes on two or three plastic hooks that drop into slots in the frame and press the door switches behind them; a pull-down door on some built-ins does the same with hooks along its top edge. Each hook is moved by a small spring and lever inside the door. When a hook cracks, a spring slips off or a lever wears, the door either will not catch or catches without pressing the switches, and the microwave refuses to start. Food and grease baked into the slots stop the hooks from going deep enough. A door that has been leaned on, hung from, or used to hold a heavy dish while open can bend at the hinge until the hooks no longer line up. Because the latch also guards against energy escaping with the door ajar, a door that closes only with force, or not squarely, is not used until it is set right.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Does the door fail to catch at all, or catch while the microwave still refuses to start?
Is one of the hooks on the door cracked, bent or missing its tip?
When closed, does the door sit level, or lower or farther out on one side?
Is food or grease packed into the slots in the frame where the hooks go?
Is anything in the way, such as a tall dish on the tray or a towel over the door edge?

Microwave door not closing: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Stop using it if the door closes only when forced, sits crooked, or the unit ever started with the door not fully shut.
Take out any dish that is too tall and anything caught at the door edge, then close it gently.
With the unit off, wipe the latch slots in the frame and the hooks with a damp cloth; nothing metal goes into the slots.
Also worth checking
- Look at each hook on the door and photograph any crack or missing tip.
- Tell us whether the door hangs level, and the model number from the label inside the door frame.
How soon does it need a visit?
A door that does not close properly is a door that may not seal, so do not run the microwave until the latch and hinge are right. Never hold, tape or wedge the door shut to get a cycle out of it.

6 things microwave door won't latch shut turns out to be, from a dish or towel in the way to a bent door or a worn hinge.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
A dish or towel in the way
A tall mug, a dish handle sticking out past the tray, or a towel draped over the edge keeps the door a fraction open, which is enough to stop the hooks.
-
02 no repair
Grease crusted in the latch slots
Splatter dries hard in the slots over the years. A damp cloth clears most of it; never push a knife or anything metal into the slots, where the switches sit.
-
03 no repair
A drawer model, not a hinged door
A microwave drawer opens and closes under its own motor, and its trouble has a page of its own.
-
04 low to moderate
A cracked latch hook or a slipped spring
The hooks and their spring live inside the door. A hook that snapped or a spring that came off its post leaves the door loose or unable to catch.
-
05 low to moderate
A switch knocked out of position
A door slammed often can shift the bracket that holds the switches, so the hooks catch but no longer press them in the right order.
-
06 moderate
A bent door or a worn hinge
The door of a hood combination takes hands, elbows and grocery bags at head height, and its hinge wears or bends first. The door is checked for a proper seal after the hinge or the door is replaced.
