What FOOD
actually means.

GE Profile microwaves track the door. If a program is started and the door has not been opened since the last use, the control assumes the cavity is empty and shows FOOD rather than running with nothing inside to absorb the energy.

What to do when FOOD shows on the microwave

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from GE Profile's own guidance for FOOD on its microwaves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Open the door, make sure the food or drink is in place and close it firmly.

02

Start the program again.

03

If FOOD appears even after the door has been opened and closed, book a visit so the door switch can be tested.

Cleared?

The code has gone and a mug of water heats again without a new part. If it comes back this week, or the food starts coming out cold in the middle, mention in the booking that it came back.

What not to do

FOOD is a safety prompt, not a heating problem. When it appears after the door has clearly been opened, the control is not seeing the door move, which points at a door switch.

What you may
notice with it.

The microwave problems FOOD tends to arrive with. Answer these at the microwave before anyone is booked.

All problems

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Something was switched on rather than something wearing out: a child or control lock set by a long press on the wrong pad, after which no key answers, a demo or showroom setting that lights the display and turns the plate while nothing warms, a Sabbath setting that dims the panel and mutes the beeps, or a clock left blinking after an outage that holds the keypad until it is set. No part is needed; a key sequence from the manual switches it off again.

Questions
about FOOD.

Can I clear FOOD myself?
Open the door, make sure the food or drink is in place and close it firmly.
Why does my GE Profile microwave say FOOD when I press Start?
It has not seen the door open since the last cycle, so it assumes nothing is inside. Open and close the door and start again.
My GE Profile microwave shows FOOD even though I just opened the door. What's wrong?
The control did not register the door opening, which points at a door switch. Stop using it until a technician has checked the switches.
Can I turn off the FOOD prompt on a GE Profile microwave?
The manuals give no way to switch it off; it goes away once the control sees the door open and close.

Still showing FOOD?

Three details make the booking useful: the characters or beeps just as they appeared, every character of the model number, and whether a cup of water still warms up. With those, the technician arrives already halfway to the answer.
