A stainless microwave hood combination mounted under white shaker wall cabinets in a US kitchen, the microwave's side-hinged door closed with its dark mesh window, a plain glass bowl visible faintly on the glass turntable inside the microwave, the lamp on its underside glowing softly onto a cooking surface that is cropped and out of focus at the bottom edge.

GE Profile microwaves,
specifically.

GE Profile sells all four shapes of microwave: hood combinations such as the PVM9005 and the convection PVM9179, the PEB7227 built-in, the PWL1126 microwave drawer and countertop models like the PEM31 and PES7227. Its displays speak in short codes such as LOC, PF, ERR and F3, so what the panel shows usually tells us where to start before any panel comes off.

The GE Profile lineup

What is particular
to GE Profile.

We service GE Profile hood combinations (PVM9005, PVM9215, the PVM9179 convection model), the PEB7227 built-in and its PES7227 countertop twin, the PWB7030 built-in convection microwave, the PWL1126 microwave drawer and compact countertop models such as the PEM31. The built-in and countertop family shows short codes like LOC and F3, while the hood combinations spell out CONTROL LOCKED and SENSOR ERROR.

Paired with the cooking surface below

The PVM9005 and PVM9179 hood combinations carry Chef Connect, which pairs the microwave with a Chef Connect-enabled GE range so its light and fan can follow what you cook underneath. GE notes that a power interruption can break that link, so a fan that stopped reacting to the burners after an outage often needs re-pairing rather than a part.

A fan that turns itself on

On the Profile hood combinations the vent fan starts automatically when it senses too much heat rising from below, to protect the microwave. We confirm that behavior before treating a fan that runs unasked as a problem, and we treat a fan that never starts over a hot pan as one.

Air fry in a hood combination

The PVM9179 adds convection baking and an Air Fry mode that uses a heating element besides the magnetron. A unit that still heats a cup of water but no longer browns or air fries points us at the element and convection circuit, not at the microwave section.

Countertop and built-in are one family

The PEB7227 built-in and the PES7227 countertop model share one owner's manual and one set of display codes, and GE sells 27- and 30-inch installation kits (JX7227, JX7230) that turn the unit into a built-in. On a kit installation the trim has to come off before the microwave can be pulled for service, and the kit's air path is checked when a built-in runs hot.

Parts

Door switches, turntable motors, charcoal and grease filters and light parts are ordered by the full model number and are usually easy to get. Control boards and touch panels on the connected hood models are specific to one model and can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

A hood combination or built-in unit is worth repairing for a switch, a fan motor, a board or a magnetron in most cases, because a replacement also means a new mounting or trim job. A small countertop PEM31 with a failed magnetron is usually better replaced.

Questions about
GE Profile microwaves.

Why does my GE Profile microwave show F3?
On the PEB7227, PES7227 and PEM31 family, F3 means a key has read as pressed for more than 60 seconds, which often follows liquid on the control panel. Press Cancel/Off, dry the panel well and try again; if F3 keeps coming back with a dry panel, the touch panel needs to be checked.
My GE Profile microwave's fan came on by itself. Is something wrong?
Usually not. The Profile hood combinations switch the vent fan on automatically when they sense too much heat rising from the cooking surface, and the fan stops once it cools. A fan that runs with nothing hot below it for a long time is worth a visit.
How do I clear LOC on a GE Profile built-in microwave?
LOC is the control lock. Hold Cancel/Off for about 3 seconds and it releases; the keys will not respond until you do.
Why did Chef Connect stop working after a power outage?
GE notes that a power interruption can break the pairing between the microwave and the range. Start pairing again from the range and hold Chef Connect on the microwave for 3 seconds; if that fails, reset the breaker and try once more.
