Miele microwaves,
specifically.

Miele's US microwaves are all built in: the M 7240 TC, a 24-inch microwave with its controls along the top that sits in a tall or base cabinet, and the speed ovens that add convection and a broil element to microwave power in a 24-inch niche. We found no Miele microwave hood combination, microwave drawer or countertop model for the US market.

All microwave types

What is particular
to Miele.

We work on the M 7240 TC built-in microwave, fitted with Miele's installation kits for wider openings, and on the H 7240 BM, H 7840 BM, H 7770 BM and H 7870 BM speed ovens. The two families use different manuals and different messages, so we confirm the model from the data plate first.

It asks before running empty

If the door has stayed shut for about 20 minutes, the M 7240 TC shows Place food in oven instead of starting. Owners sometimes read that as a stuck control, so we confirm the prompt clears with a door opening before testing anything else.

A lock that opens one cycle at a time

With the system lock on, the display asks you to hold OK for six seconds, and that unlocks only the next cooking process. A household that finds the lock tiresome can turn it off in the Safety menu, which saves a service call for a panel that is working as designed.

Speed ovens need a 240-volt, 30-amp circuit

The H 7240 BM speed oven's spec sheet calls for a 120/208-240 V, 30-amp supply with a NEMA 14-30 plug, unlike a typical 120-volt microwave. A speed oven that loses power or trips its breaker is checked at that circuit as well as inside the appliance.

Cabinet doors must stay open while it runs

When the M 7240 TC is built in behind a cabinet door, Miele says to leave that door open during cooking because heat and moisture collect behind it. A microwave that shuts itself off mid-cycle in such a cabinet often has an air-flow problem rather than a failed part.

Parts

Miele puts the model and serial number on a data plate on the front frame, seen with the door fully open, and parts are ordered by those numbers. Control and door parts for a speed oven can take longer to arrive than a turntable drive or a lamp.

Repair or replace

A built-in Miele microwave or speed oven is usually worth repairing when the problem is a door switch, a turntable drive, a lamp or a sensor. When the magnetron and the control fail together on an older unit, replacement deserves a side-by-side look, especially since a new unit must fit the same niche.

Questions about
Miele microwaves.

Does Miele make a microwave that mounts over the cooking surface or a microwave drawer?
Not that we could find for the US. Miele's US microwaves are the M 7240 TC built-in model and its speed ovens, so those are the Miele units we see on visits.
Why does my Miele microwave switch itself off partway through cooking?
Miele designs it to switch off if it overheats, which usually means the vents are blocked or a cabinet door in front of it was closed. Clear the air path and let it cool; if it keeps shutting off, book a visit.
My Miele microwave's display is dark. Is it broken?
Check the clock display setting first, since Miele lets you turn it off so the screen stays dark while the microwave is off. If it will not wake when switched on, the supply or the control needs checking.
The turntable in my Miele microwave moves in jerks. What causes that?
Miele points to dirt on the turntable, its support or the cavity floor. Clean all three and the contact points between them; if it still jerks, the drive needs a look.
