Smeg microwaves,
specifically.

Smeg's US microwaves are the OTR24XU and OTR316XU hood combinations, 24-inch built-in microwaves with a broil element (FMIU020X and SFU4300MX / SOCU2300MX), the SOCU2304MCX, SOCU3304MCX and SFU4104MCS combi microwave ovens, and the MWD24XU microwave drawer. Smeg sells no countertop microwave in the US, and its displays use short words such as SAFE and LOCKED, plus ERR numbers on the combi ovens.

The Smeg lineup

What is particular
to Smeg.

We service the OTR24XU and OTR316XU hood combinations, the FMIU020X, SFU4300MX and SOCU2300MX built-in microwaves, the SOCU2304MCX, SOCU3304MCX and SFU4104MCS combi microwave ovens, and the MWD24XU drawer. These come from different platforms with different keypads and messages, so the model number matters when you book.

SAFE instead of LOCK

Smeg's compact microwave with broil element shows SAFE when its Safety Block is on and then refuses every function. Dead keys on this model are checked against that setting before the board.

A broil element in a microwave

The 24-inch built-in models brown and crisp with a top element, and Smeg warns of some smoke and smell the first time it is used. Smoke later on, or a burning smell during plain microwave use, is a different matter and gets a visit.

Combi ovens with ERR codes

The combi microwave ovens bake, roast and microwave in one cavity and report problems as ERR plus a number. Smeg asks owners to note the message, function and temperature, which saves time on the visit.

Drawer with Open and Close keys

The MWD24XU drawer moves on separate Open and Close keys, and pressing either while it moves stops it. A drawer that halts on its own, rather than on a keypress, is where we check the drive.

Parts

Every Smeg part is matched to the unit's model and serial number. Combi microwave ovens share parts with Smeg's compact ovens in some places and not others, so boards and elements are confirmed before ordering.

Repair or replace

A combi microwave oven or a drawer fitted to its opening is usually worth repairing. A hood model with an aging fan motor and a failed magnetron is where a replacement deserves a comparison.

Questions about
Smeg microwaves.

Does Smeg make a countertop microwave for the US?
Not in its current US lineup. Smeg sells hood combinations, built-in models, combi microwave ovens and a drawer, all installed in cabinetry.
Why does my Smeg microwave smoke the first time I use the broil element?
Smeg expects some smoke and a smell on the first use from oils left from manufacturing. If it keeps smoking after that, stop it, keep the door closed and book a visit.
Why won't my Smeg combi microwave oven heat?
Check whether demo mode is set, which Smeg lists first for an oven that does not heat. With demo ruled out, the heating parts need a technician.
How do I run the fan on my Smeg hood microwave?
Press the vent key once for HIGH, twice for LOW and three times for OFF. If HIGH shows but no air moves, the fan motor or its filters need checking.
