Smeg SAFE: the built-in microwave is in child lock

Book a visit

Three short steps, about a minute.

or call (844) 393-5858

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Smeg's own guidance for SAFE on its microwaves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Press and hold the Stop key for three to five seconds.

02

Check that SAFE has left the display and the clock or keys respond.

03

Try a short cook with a cup of water to confirm heating.

04

If SAFE will not clear or returns on its own, book a visit for the keypad and board.

Cleared?

The code has gone and a mug of water heats again without a new part. If it comes back this week, or the food starts coming out cold in the middle, mention in the booking that it came back.

What not to do

SAFE is not a safety alarm or a sign of overheating; it is only the lock setting. The same manual reminds you to check the Safety Block whenever the keys do nothing.

What you may
notice with it.

The microwave problems SAFE tends to arrive with. Answer these at the microwave before anyone is booked.

All problems

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Something was switched on rather than something wearing out: a child or control lock set by a long press on the wrong pad, after which no key answers, a demo or showroom setting that lights the display and turns the plate while nothing warms, a Sabbath setting that dims the panel and mutes the beeps, or a clock left blinking after an outage that holds the keypad until it is set. No part is needed; a key sequence from the manual switches it off again.

In Smeg's own words

"SAFE" appears on the display and the oven performs no function.

Questions
about SAFE.

Can I clear SAFE myself?
Press and hold the Stop key for three to five seconds.
Does SAFE on my Smeg microwave mean something is wrong?
No. It means the child lock is on. A long press on Stop releases it.
How was SAFE set on my Smeg microwave?
By holding the Stop key for a few seconds, which is easy to do by accident when canceling a program. The same hold turns it off.
What if nothing happens when I press keys and SAFE is not shown?
Then check whether the time display has been switched off in the basic settings. Keys that stay dead after that point to the keypad or board, which a visit sorts out.

Back to your everyday

Still showing SAFE?

Three details make the booking useful: the characters or beeps just as they appeared, every character of the model number, and whether a cup of water still warms up. With those, the technician arrives already halfway to the answer.
