Glass Tray Not Turning in a Microwave

A microwave turntable not turning leaves the glass tray still while the rest of the microwave runs, or makes it jerk, grind, rock back and forth, or move only when the plate is light, and food comes out hot on one side and cold on the other.

What it
usually means.

The turntable is three pieces: a glass tray, a roller ring with small wheels that carries it, and a coupler in the center that sits on the shaft of a small motor under the cavity floor. The tray may turn either way, and on many models it changes direction from one cycle to the next, which is normal. When it stops, the cause is often in plain view: the tray sitting beside the coupler instead of on it, a wheel of the ring out of its track, a spill dried into a sticky ring, or a dish too wide that rubs the walls. A coupler cracks with age and slips on the shaft. When the tray, ring and coupler are all fine, the motor under the floor or its wiring has failed; depending on the model it is reached from underneath or from inside the outer case. Some models have a turntable on/off key for oversized dishes, and microwave drawers use no turntable at all.

The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Does the tray sit squarely on the coupler and the roller ring, with each wheel in its track?

02

Does it turn with the tray empty but stop under a heavy dish?

03

Is there a grinding or clicking under the tray, or silence?

04

Is the coupler in the center cracked, rounded inside, or loose on its shaft?

05

Does your model have a turntable on/off key, and could it have been pressed?

Microwave turntable not turning: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

With the unit off, lift out the glass tray and the roller ring, wash them and the cavity floor, and set them back so the tray's notches sit over the coupler.

02

Look at the coupler for cracks or rounded ribs, and roll each wheel of the ring to see that it turns freely.

03

Try a short cycle with a cup of water, then with a heavier dish, to see whether weight stops it.

Also worth checking

  • Check the manual for a turntable on/off key and make sure it is on.
  • If the tray still does not move, send us the model number from the label inside the door frame; the motor is reached from under or inside the case.

How soon does it need a visit?

Not urgent. The microwave still heats, but unevenly, so stir halfway and turn the dish by hand until the coupler or the motor is replaced.

6 things glass tray not turning in a microwave turns out to be, from tray off the coupler or a wheel out of track to wiring or a relay feeding the motor.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Tray off the coupler or a wheel out of track

The tray's underside has notches that must sit over the coupler, and the ring's wheels ride in a shallow track. After washing, either is easy to set back a little off.

  2. 02 no repair

    The turntable switched off

Some models let the owner stop the turntable for a dish too large to turn. The setting stays until it is switched back on.

  3. 03 no repair

A dried spill or a dish too wide

Sugar and sauce under the ring glue the wheels, and a platter that touches the side walls stops the tray on every turn.

  4. 04 lowest

    A cracked or worn coupler

The small plastic coupler wears round inside or splits, and the motor spins without taking the tray along. It is one of the cheapest parts in a microwave.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Turntable motor worn out

The motor under the cavity floor is small and slow by design. When it hums without turning, or turns only when helped, it is replaced from underneath or inside the case.

  6. 06 moderate

Wiring or a relay feeding the motor

If a new motor is silent too, the wire, the door switch that feeds it on some models, or the relay on the board is next.

Questions about
glass tray not turning in a microwave.

My turntable turns a different way each time. Is that a problem?
No. Many turntable motors start in whichever direction they happen to, and some reverse on purpose. Only stopping, stalling or grinding needs attention.
Can I keep using the microwave with the tray standing still?
Yes, for a while. Stir or turn the food partway through, since the energy lands unevenly on a plate that does not move.
Can I buy a new coupler or roller ring on my own?
Yes. The tray, the ring and the coupler are sold by model number and fit from inside the cavity. The motor under the floor is a different job and is done on a visit.
Why does my microwave drawer have no turntable?
Drawer models spread the energy through the cavity in their own way and heat without turning the dish. Uneven heating in a drawer is a question for the heating and sensor side instead.
