A view from below of a stainless microwave hood combination mounted under wall cabinets in a US kitchen, one of the microwave's mesh grease filters slid out and held in a technician's hand, the second filter still in place beside the small lamp on the underside of the microwave, the cooking surface below cropped out of the frame.

What the microwave vent fan and filter repair
involves.

The exhaust side of a microwave hood combination is its own small machine. Air from the pans below passes through two mesh grease filters on the underside, then a blower pulls it up and either pushes it into a duct to the outside or, on a recirculating setup, through a charcoal filter above the door and back into the kitchen. The blower has two or more speeds switched by relays on the control board, and a heat switch on the underside starts it automatically when the burners get hot. When the kitchen fills with haze or the fan sounds weak, the cause is often the filters: grease mesh that has not been soaked in months, or a charcoal filter long past its six-month life. Beyond that the blower motor can slow as its bearings dry, grind or stop, its speed relay can stick on or off, and the automatic heat switch can fail open or closed, leaving the fan running with the burners cold. The technician checks the filters and the damper at the duct outlet first, then tests the motor's windings and supply, the relays and the heat switch with the capacitor discharged. Some blower motors are reached from the front grille; others mean lifting the unit off the wall. This service covers the microwave's own fan, light and filters; ducts and roof caps are separate work.

How the visit goes

Microwave vent fan and filter repair,
step by step.

Run every fan speed and the lamp, and show you how to take the filters out and wash them next time.

01

Run the fan at each speed, feel the air at the grille, and look at the grease filters and the charcoal filter if there is one.

02

Check the damper at the duct outlet on top, and whether the fan starts on its own when heat reaches the underside.

03

Cut the power, discharge the capacitor, and test the blower motor, its speed relays on the board and the automatic heat switch.

04

Clean or replace the filters, and replace a worn motor, relay or heat switch, lifting the unit off the wall when the motor is reached from above.

05

Run every fan speed and the lamp, and show you how to take the filters out and wash them next time.

5 of them, from microwave vent fan not pulling steam to microwave light out inside or underneath.

All problems
A stainless microwave hood combination under wall cabinets with its side-hinged door with a mesh window closed, soft steam rising from below past the front of the microwave and drifting up against the cabinet doors, one mesh grease filter under the unit dark with grease. Most common

Microwave Vent Fan Not Pulling Steam

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether the fan does not run at all, runs weakly, runs at only one speed, or will not turn off
  2. Whether it vents outdoors through a duct or blows back into the kitchen through a charcoal filter
  3. When the grease filters were last washed and the charcoal filter last changed
  4. Any grinding, rattling or burning smell from the top of the unit

It also answers

Low to moderate,
on the site's scale.

Washing the grease filters or fitting a new charcoal filter is the smallest job here. A blower motor, a speed relay or the automatic heat switch costs more, and a motor reached from above means lifting the unit off its mounting plate.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A Tampa Bay kitchen that fries grouper below loads a microwave hood combination's grease filters fast, and an exhaust fan that roars or slows is repaired after those filters are cleaned and the fan motor itself is tested.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Rental guests in Orlando seldom wash a microwave's grease filters, and a hood combination whose fan hums without moving air usually needs fresh filters, a new charcoal filter on recirculating models and sometimes a fan motor.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Many South Florida condos cannot duct to the outside, so the microwave hood combination recirculates through a charcoal filter, and one left for years lets smells hang and makes the fan labor; the repair replaces it and checks the motor.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Most New York apartments have no duct to the street, so a microwave hood combination cleans the air through its charcoal filter, and when the fan rattles or quits the repair renews the filter and the motor from beneath the cabinet.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston cooking steam cakes grease inside a microwave hood combination's fan, and a fan that switches on by itself is often responding to heat from the burners below, the unit's own protection, which the technician confirms before calling it a failure.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland microwave hood combination ducted through an outside wall can let winter drafts back through its damper, and a flap stuck open or a fan that squeals in the cold is repaired with the unit lowered from its wall plate.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles houses often duct the microwave hood combination through an outside wall, and fine ash left by the January 2025 fires still clogs some of those ducts and filters, so a weak or noisy fan repair includes clearing that path.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego coastal kitchens pull damp, salty air through a microwave hood combination's fan, and a motor whose bearings have rusted whines before it seizes; the repair replaces it and fits fresh grease filters.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels often pair a microwave hood combination with a gas burner surface below, and its fan carries heavy steam and grease; a fan stuck on one speed or a panel that no longer switches it is traced to the switch board or the motor.

Questions about
the microwave vent fan and filter repair.

The fan on my microwave will not turn off. Why?
The heat switch under the unit may still sense warmth from the burners, which keeps the fan on by design until the area cools. If it keeps running long after everything below is cold, the heat switch or a fan relay on the board has stuck. Switching the breaker off for a minute sometimes clears a relay; if it returns, it needs testing.
How do I know whether my microwave vents outside or recirculates?
Open the cabinet above: a metal duct rising from the top of the unit means it vents outdoors. If there is no duct and air blows out of a grille above the door, it recirculates through a charcoal filter behind that grille, which should be changed every six months to a year.
Why does my microwave fan sound weaker than it used to?
Clogged grease filters, a charcoal filter saturated with grease, or a duct damper that sticks shut all cut airflow. Wash the grease filters in hot soapy water and check the charcoal filter's age. If the fan still sounds labored, the blower motor's bearings or its speed relay are the next suspects.
