What the microwave light and fuse repair
involves.

A microwave has more than one light and more than one protective part, and this service looks after both. The cavity lamp shows the food through the door; on a hood combination a second lamp lights the burners below. Bulbs fail with age and heat, but sockets scorch, lens covers crack, and on many models the lamp is switched by a door switch or a relay on the board, so a dark cavity can be a switch, not a bulb. The fuse is a different matter. A microwave's line fuse sits behind the outer cabinet and blows for a reason: a door switch closing out of order, a shorted diode or capacitor, a failing magnetron, a pinched wire or a surge. When it blows, the unit goes completely dead, display and all. Fitting a new fuse without finding its cause means it blows again, sometimes at once, and on a door-switch problem it hides the danger that tripped it. So the technician discharges the capacitor, tests the fuse, then works back through the door switches and the high-voltage section until the reason is found, and fixes that with the fuse. Some models also carry a thermal fuse or cutouts that open from heat; those are tested in the same pass.

How the visit goes

Microwave light and fuse repair,
step by step.

Close the cabinet, power it up, and show every light and a full heating cycle working.

01

Check which lights work and which do not, and whether the display, the fan and the turntable are dead too.

02

Replace a spent cavity or cooktop bulb where it is reached from outside, and look at its socket and lens.

03

Cut the power and discharge the capacitor, then test the line fuse, the thermal fuses and the lamp's switch or relay.

04

Trace what blew the fuse through the door switches and the high-voltage parts, and replace that part and the fuse together.

05

Close the cabinet, power it up, and show every light and a full heating cycle working.

Microwave Light Out Inside or Underneath

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Which light is out: the one inside the cavity, the one under a hood combination, or both
  2. Whether the display, fan and turntable are dead too, or only the light
  3. What happened just before it went dead: a slammed door, a pop, a flash or a tripped breaker
  4. Whether you have already tried a new bulb, and what type it was

Low,
on the site's scale.

Bulbs, sockets, fuses and thermal cutouts are inexpensive parts. The cost follows what blew the fuse: when the cause is a door switch or a high-voltage part, that repair is priced with it.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A Tampa Bay microwave that went completely dead after a storm often has a blown line fuse, and since that fuse sits inside the cabinet near the charged capacitor, the owner leaves it to the technician, who also finds out why it blew.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In an Orlando rental the task light under a microwave hood combination is left burning overnight by guests, and bulbs go often; a light that stays dark even with a new bulb points to its socket or its switch board.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida condos that restart every appliance at once after an outage can blow a microwave's internal fuse, and the repair replaces that fuse only after finding what made it blow, most often a worn door switch.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In older New York apartments a microwave and a toaster on one outlet trip breakers, and a unit that went dark while the breaker held has likely blown its own fuse; that fuse is inside the cabinet, so the technician replaces it.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston microwaves that lost power in a storm and came back dark usually point to a blown internal fuse or an open thermal cutout, and the technician checks the door interlocks too, since a failed monitor switch is a common reason fuses blow.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland microwave hood combination lights the cooking surface every winter evening, and a lamp that flickers may have a socket loosened by the heat rising from below; the repair replaces the socket or the lamp holder, not only the bulb.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

A Los Angeles microwave with its cavity light out but heating normally needs only a lamp, while one dark all over and silent has usually blown its fuse; the second repair begins with the cause, often a door interlock.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Close to the San Diego surf, a microwave's lamp sockets turn green with corrosion, and a cavity lamp that flickers on only after the door is nudged gets a new socket rather than yet another bulb.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

An older Bay Area house may trip its kitchen breaker when the microwave and a space heater share a circuit, and a unit that stays dark after the breaker is reset has usually blown its internal fuse, which the technician replaces.

Questions about
the microwave light and fuse repair.

Can I change the fuse in my microwave myself?
No. The fuse sits behind the outer cabinet beside the high-voltage capacitor, which can hold a dangerous charge after unplugging. The fuse also blew for a reason, often a door switch or a high-voltage part, and a new fuse alone can blow again or hide a hazard. Leave it for the visit.
The light under my microwave hood combination is out. Is it just the bulb?
Often, yes. With the unit switched off and the lamp cool, remove the small lens cover underneath and replace the bulb with the type in your manual. If a new bulb still does not light, or the fan went out at the same time, the socket, a relay on the board or a switch is the next thing tested.
My microwave is completely dead, no display at all. Where do I start?
Check the breaker and plug something else into the same outlet; hood combinations plug in inside the cabinet above. If the outlet has power and the microwave is still dark, the internal fuse has probably blown, and the part that caused it has to be found inside the cabinet by a technician.
