What SE
actually means.

SE is the KitchenAid microwave's shorted-key signal. The control reads a key that never releases, usually from a worn membrane, liquid that got under the panel or a pinched cable, and it blocks cooking so the stuck key cannot start the magnetron on its own.

What to do when SE shows on the microwave

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for SE on its microwaves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Switch the microwave off at the breaker for one full minute, then switch it back on.

02

Clean the keypad gently with a barely damp cloth, then dry it; never spray cleaner straight onto the panel.

03

Leave it idle for a minute and watch the display; if the code does not return, run a short test cycle.

04

If SE comes back, book a visit to replace the keypad.

It usually turns into microwave control board and touchpad repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

SE does not mean the microwave has been set to a special mode. It is also not a sign of a power problem in the house, since a power loss shows PF or a blinking colon instead.

What you may
notice with it.

The microwave problems SE tends to arrive with. Answer these at the microwave before anyone is booked.

Questions
about SE.

Can I clear SE myself?
Switch the microwave off at the breaker for one full minute, then switch it back on. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What causes SE on a KitchenAid microwave?
A key the control reads as permanently pressed. Spilled liquid, steam and plain wear on a membrane that is pressed hundreds of times a year are the usual reasons.
Can I keep using my KitchenAid while it shows SE?
Not until it clears. The control locks cooking out on purpose so a stuck key cannot start it.
Does SE mean the whole control board has to go?
Usually the keypad membrane is the part, not the main board. The technician tests the key circuit before ordering anything.

Still showing SE?

Three details make the booking useful: the characters or beeps just as they appeared, every character of the model number, and whether a cup of water still warms up. With those, the technician arrives already halfway to the answer.
