What Demo
actually means.

Demo mode is a showroom setting that lets you practice on the keypad without heating. On a KitchenAid microwave it looks like a normal cycle, which is why it is so often taken for a dead magnetron. Older controls show dOn and dOff when the mode is changed.

What to do when Demo shows on the microwave

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for Demo on its microwaves. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Look for the Demo icon or a d in the display.

02

On newer hood models, touch Setup/Clock, go to the Demo Mode submenu and follow the prompts to switch it off.

03

On older models, open the door, hold the 3 key for 5 seconds, then press Start within 5 seconds; dOff confirms it.

04

Heat a cup of water for a minute; if it is still cold with Demo off, book a visit.

Cleared?

The code has gone and a mug of water heats again without a new part. If it comes back this week, or the food starts coming out cold in the middle, mention in the booking that it came back.

What not to do

A cold plate with the Demo icon lit is not a magnetron or diode problem. A cold plate with no Demo icon is, and that one needs a technician because the high-voltage parts are never serviced by an owner.

What you may
notice with it.

The microwave problems Demo tends to arrive with. Answer these at the microwave before anyone is booked.

All problems

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Something was switched on rather than something wearing out: a child or control lock set by a long press on the wrong pad, after which no key answers, a demo or showroom setting that lights the display and turns the plate while nothing warms, a Sabbath setting that dims the panel and mutes the beeps, or a clock left blinking after an outage that holds the keypad until it is set. No part is needed; a key sequence from the manual switches it off again.

Questions
about Demo.

Can I clear Demo myself?
Look for the Demo icon or a d in the display.
My KitchenAid microwave runs but the food stays cold. Could it be Demo mode?
Yes, that is exactly how Demo mode behaves: light on, fan running, timer counting, no heat. Check the display for the Demo icon before booking a repair.
How did Demo mode get turned on in my KitchenAid?
Sometimes the unit leaves the showroom that way, and on older controls a long press on the 3 key with the door open starts the sequence. It stays on until switched off.
Does a factory reset turn off Demo mode on a KitchenAid?
The newer Setup/Clock menu has both Demo Mode and Factory Reset entries. Switching Demo off directly in its own submenu is the simpler route.

Back to your everyday

Still showing Demo?

Three details make the booking useful: the characters or beeps just as they appeared, every character of the model number, and whether a cup of water still warms up. With those, the technician arrives already halfway to the answer.
