A microwave hood combination, sold by most makers as an over-the-range microwave, does two jobs from one steel box bolted to a plate on the wall and hung from the cabinet overhead. Its cavity reheats and defrosts like any microwave; its underside carries a pair of mesh grease filters, a cooktop light and an exhaust fan that either pushes air outdoors through a duct or passes it through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen. The electronics sit a foot or two above open flames and boiling pots, which is why these models carry a thermal switch that turns the fan on by itself when the heat underneath climbs, and why a clogged filter can make the whole unit run hot. Its power cord does not reach a wall outlet at counter height: it passes through a hole into the cabinet above and plugs in there, out of sight. Taking one down is a two-person job with the bolts through the cabinet floor and the weight hanging on a hinge of tabs, so a visit starts with everything that can be reached from the front and the underside before anyone lifts it off the wall. Most of these units carry a heat sensor on the underside that starts the fan when the burners below get hot, to protect the electronics. It keeps running until that area cools, and on many models it cannot be switched off with the fan key while the heat lasts. If it starts with the burners off and cold, the sensor or the board is worth a look. ### How often should the grease filters under the microwave be cleaned? About once a month in a kitchen that cooks every day, more often if you fry. Soak them in hot water with dish soap or run them through a dishwasher cycle, and let them dry before sliding them back. A recirculating unit also has a charcoal filter that cannot be washed and is replaced every six months to a year. ### Can I unplug a microwave hood combination before a repair visit? Yes, and it is a good idea if it sparks, smells or trips a breaker. The plug is in the cabinet directly above the unit, usually behind dishes or spices.
