The turntable is three pieces: a glass tray, a roller ring with small wheels that carries it, and a coupler in the center that sits on the shaft of a small motor under the cavity floor. The tray may turn either way, and on many models it changes direction from one cycle to the next, which is normal. When it stops, the cause is often in plain view: the tray sitting beside the coupler instead of on it, a wheel of the ring out of its track, a spill dried into a sticky ring, or a dish too wide that rubs the walls. A coupler cracks with age and slips on the shaft. When the tray, ring and coupler are all fine, the motor under the floor or its wiring has failed; depending on the model it is reached from underneath or from inside the outer case. Some models have a turntable on/off key for oversized dishes, and microwave drawers use no turntable at all.
