Dumbo grew around a ferry landing and is lined with 19th- and early-20th-century factory and warehouse buildings on Belgian block streets. ## What DUMBO does to a microwave. By the late 1970s, artists and other young homesteaders were renting big, low-cost loft floors in its empty factories. Residents coined the name, for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, in 1978, hoping such an odd name would keep developers away. ZIP code 11201, which takes in Dumbo, has 58 percent of its housing units in buildings of 50 or more apartments. [All of New York Metro](https://microwaverepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Tower living Tower kitchens are usually all-electric and often cannot duct outside, so the microwave hood combination cleans the air through a charcoal filter, and one left unchanged for years is why the apartment still smells of last week's dinner. ### Older housing stock Older houses run the kitchen on circuits laid out long before microwaves, and a unit that trips the breaker or dims the lights on start may be healthy on a circuit that is not; the circuit is measured first. ### On the water Salt air off the ocean or a bay corrodes a microwave's latch hooks, lamp sockets and the contacts behind its touchpad, and a unit that starts only after a second close is showing that corrosion at its door interlocks. ## A visit in DUMBO.
