The neighborhood's ground is landfill placed in the Hudson during the 1970s, using earth excavated for the World Trade Center and a city water tunnel plus sand dredged off Staten Island. ## What Battery Park City does to a microwave. Hurricane Sandy drove the water at the Battery, at the southern tip of Manhattan, to 9.40 feet of surge, the highest level on record there. As early as 1929, a large housing development for Wall Street workers was proposed for the site. Half of the homes in ZIP code 10282 date from 2001 or later, and 94 percent are in buildings of 50 or more units. [All of New York Metro](https://microwaverepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Tower living Tower kitchens are usually all-electric and often cannot duct outside, so the microwave hood combination cleans the air through a charcoal filter, and one left unchanged for years is why the apartment still smells of last week's dinner. ### Newer developments Builder-grade microwave hood combinations in newer houses often recirculate rather than duct outside, and their charcoal filters were never changed after move-in; a stale kitchen and a laboring fan follow. ### On the water Salt air off the ocean or a bay corrodes a microwave's latch hooks, lamp sockets and the contacts behind its touchpad, and a unit that starts only after a second close is showing that corrosion at its door interlocks. ## A visit in Battery Park City.
